New 'Mission'; Opens Weaker Than Expected

LOS ANGELES, May 7 — Paramount Pictures and its leading star, Tom Cruise, failed to live up to expectations this weekend when "Mission: Impossible III" opened to weak numbers at the domestic box office despite a barrage of public appearances by Mr. Cruise to promote the film.

The poor opening followed nearly a year of public mocking of Mr. Cruise, Hollywood's most reliable star and the centerpiece of Paramount's biggest franchise, across the pop culture landscape — by Internet bloggers and late-night comedians and constantly on tabloid covers — after his public, over-the-top wooing of the actress Katie Holmes and his outspoken remarks against psychiatry and antidepressant medications last year.

Opening in 4,054 theaters, "Mission: Impossible III" had estimated ticket sales of $48 million for the weekend, according to Exhibitor Relations, almost $10 million less than the second "Mission: Impossible" movie in 2000, which opened in 385 fewer theaters and at lower ticket prices. Based on market research, the film had been expected to reach about $65 million at the box office.

Many in Hollywood had been watching expectantly to see if the negative publicity surrounding Mr. Cruise would have an effect at the box office, and this weekend — as "Mission: Impossible III" kicked off the film industry's peak summer moviegoing period — it appeared as if it had.

Paramount reported that "Mission: Impossible III" took in $118 million worldwide in 55 countries, doing well in Asia, Latin America and Britain and poorly in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, where there is public opposition to Mr. Cruise's championing of his religion, Scientology.

But Paramount executives said that Mr. Cruise's public image did not hurt the film. "I don't believe that is a factor in how the movie opened," said Rob Moore, Paramount's president for worldwide marketing, distribution and operations. He noted that the opening domestic figure was close to that of "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" last summer, which starred Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, and said the "Mission" franchise was struggling against the fact that it had been six years since the previous installment.

Others disagreed, noting that Mr. Cruise personally spearheaded the marketing campaign. He visited four countries in rapid succession ahead of the opening — going to Rome, Paris, London and Mexico City — and on Friday attended four different premieres in Manhattan alone, traveling by helicopter, fire truck, subway and boat in a promotional blitz across the city.

"I can't fault the marketing campaign; I can't fault the trailers," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Exhibitor Relations, which tracks the box office, adding that the film, directed by J. J. Abrams, received strong reviews. "The only X factor here is the Tom Cruise factor."

The derision of Mr. Cruise began last spring when he embarked on his relationship with Ms. Holmes just as both actors were preparing to release big-budget movies, "War of the Worlds" for Mr. Cruise and "Batman Begins" for Ms. Holmes. The news media and fans expressed skepticism at the public nature of the romance, which intensified even as the formerly private Mr. Cruise increasingly involved Scientology in his business affairs.

Since then, Mr. Cruise has evolved into a kind of cultural punch line. In "Scary Movie 4," which is still in theaters, one scene is a parody of Mr. Cruise's couch-jumping appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last May.

Several reviews of "Mission: Impossible 3" pointed out that Mr. Cruise's public persona had become a distraction when watching him on the big screen. "It's impossible to watch 'M:I-3' without asking: Do we still, you know, like Tom Cruise?" the critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in Entertainment Weekly, while Manohla Dargis wrote in The New York Times: "It would be a stretch to say that Tom Cruise needs a hit. What this guy needs is an intervention."

In addition to being the kickoff for the summer movie season, "Mission: Impossible III" was the first major release that had been given a green light by Paramount under Brad Grey, who took over as chairman in early 2005. Mr. Grey caused a stir last year when the studio threatened to pull the plug on the movie just ahead of production unless the budget was cut and Mr. Cruise — who is also a producer of the film — cut his fee.

As a result of that stand, the budget was trimmed to $165 million from about $200 million, and Mr. Cruise agreed to take about 25 percent of the movie's gross revenue, several percentage points less than his original deal, according to a senior Paramount executive.

Paramount executives said that exit polls this weekend showed the film's audience to be mainly over 25, adding that they hoped strong word-of-mouth would help drive a younger audience to the film as the summer continued. But market research ahead of the movie's release also showed that Mr. Cruise had lost ground among an important part of his fan base, female moviegoers.

In Hollywood many were left this weekend pondering the future of star power and looking ahead to the next test case, "The Da Vinci Code," starring Tom Hanks, on May 19. As Mr. Dergarabedian put it, "It shows you the importance of the star and their public image."

Washington: Hollywood actor Tom Cruise is reportedly so worried about people sifting through his trash to get his personal details, that he has appointed a guard to keep security of his trash.

A source revealed that the actor not only had his Scientology bodyguard take out the trash, but also made sure that the guard remained next to it till the garbage truck came around to collect it.

"One of his Scientology bodyguards takes out his rubbish. It's funny to watch a beefy guy keeping watch over a bag of garbage until it's picked up," Contactmusic quoted the source, as telling British newspaper The Sunday Express.

Cruise who is upbeat about his recently acquired fatherhood is said to be superstitious and finicky at times.

Ok, Katie. The gig is up. Has anyone ever seen a past-due, pregnant woman look like this? She has a thin face, thin arms, and walks upright, as if she's carrying a lightweight pillow. Here is a picture of Katie Holmes, who is expecting her baby with fiancé Tom Cruise "any minute," shopping at Barneys New York in Beverly Hills yesterday. In addition to the her suspiciously energetic shopping spree, does anyone else think her bulge is suspiciously odd? Also,how long has Katie been pregnant anyway? At this rate, she'll be delivering a kindegartener soon.

Media sources who have been watching her shop, visit Yahoo, and go to a recent sporting event, commented on how easily Katie moves around, and hops into vehicles. Women in their 9th month do not move like this, nor do they wear regular tight jeans. Her 'pregnant' stomach is too high!

Some gossip blogs speculate that Tom & Katie have already had the baby, while others guess that the couple is really adopting a baby.

The entire Tom and Katie relationship from the start has been baffling. Rushed courtship, over the top proclamations to love, and now a baby to be born a la' Scientology style?

Hey guys!

Many of you have emailed in stating that our vids have stopped working - some of you even went so far as to find out why and were told by the company hosting the videos for us (YouTube) that they were "removed at the request of the owner"

Well, that's a bunch of baloney. No doubt, just like Viacom and screaming "It wasn't Tom that make us pull South Park Trapped in the Closet it was because of respect for Mr. Hayes" (YEAH RIGHT!), the vids on ScienTOMogy were NOT pulled at my request. I received no notice, warning, or communication of any kind from YouTube (kinda rude after pulling 3 million new viewers to their site!) nor are they even replying to requests as to what happened.

But, coincidently this happened the SAME DAY Viacom pulled South Park **reportedly** due to Cruise's pressure to drop all promotion of MI3 if they didn't. Occam's Razor points straight to Cruise sabotage here as well.

BUT NEVER FEAR! I immediately moved some of the more popular vids onto a backup (like the South Park episode of course!) and all the movies will be back online within a couple of days. We're moving to http://www.dailymotion.com - which as luck would have it has a FAR superior service... the vids will be faster, sharper and even better available for download as well as online live streaming. Cruise Shuts Down 'South Park'?(!!)

Tom Cruise reportedly forced network Comedy Central to cancel the repeat of a South Park episode about Scientology by threatening to boycott publicity events for Mission: Impossible 3, according to media reports.

The star is alleged to have pressurized Hollywood executives at Paramount Pictures which are owned by Viacom--as is Comedy Central.

South Park episode "Trapped In The Closet" thrilled fans when it aired in November, by poking fun at both Cruise and his controversial beliefs system. But, despite being scheduled to rerun on Wednesday night, it was mysteriously pulled at the last minute.

However, Cruise's spokesman denies the star threatened executives: "He never said any such thing about Mission: Impossible 3."

South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone issued an statement to Daily Variety saying,

"So, Scientology, you may have won this battle, but the million-year war for earth has just begun!
Temporarily anozinizing (corr) our episode will not stop us from keeping Thetans forever trapped in your pitiful man-bodies.
Curses and drat! You have obstructed us now, but your feeble bid to save humanity will fail! Hail Xenu."

The statement is signed "Trey Parker and Matt Stone, servants to the dark lord Xenu".

The A-list actor whose blockbuster hits, including last year's "War of the Worlds," won the Razzie award on Saturday for "most tiresome tabloid target."

The Razzies, which parody self-congratulatory Hollywood award shows such as the Oscars by roasting the worst of Tinseltown, this year added the "most tiresome" category to salute "the celebs we're ALL sick and tired of."

Cruise won the award for his "antics with fiancée Katie Holmes." Cruise professed his love for the actress in an appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" last May where he jumped up and down on a sofa like a man possessed.

Cruise's behaviour spawned a slang phrase "jump the couch," meaning a defining moment when you know someone has gone off the deep end, providing endless material for late-night comedians.

Cruise then proposed to Holmes in June at the Eiffel Tower in Paris and announced their engagement the next day at a news conference, prompting speculation it was all a publicity stunt to promote their summer films -- "War of the Worlds" for Cruise and "Batman Begins" for Holmes.

Cruise, a member of the Church of Scientology which eschews psychiatry, almost beat himself out for the award. He was also nominated for his attack on psychiatry and anti-depressant drugs made in an interview on NBC's "Today" show last June.

On the program, he said "psychiatry is a pseudoscience," and said actress Brooke Shields should have used vitamins rather than anti-depressants to battle postpartum depression.

What else can Tom Cruise do to make a fool of himself? Well, he could climb a rope up to the balcony of a crowded club to see some rapper rap. Yes, it's true. Tom Cruise reportedly climbed a rope from the floor of Hollywood's Avalon club up to a balcony, where he then proceeded to watch Kanye West perform on Monday night, according to KP International.

As if his couch-jumping antics on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" or his Scientology tirade against Matt Lauer weren't enough. Here is a man with a reputation of being a loon, so naturally, he was invited to attend a pre-Grammy party hosted by "Rolling Stone" magazine and Verizon, where he doesn't disappoint.

It's been recently confirmed, according to published reports, that Grammy-winning rapster Kanye West has agreed to record his version of the "Mission: Impossible" theme for the third film of the series. The new release is due to arrive in theatres in May. "We wanted to take this installment of "Mission" to the next level," Cruise is quoted as saying. "And Kanye's music definitely added to accomplishing that goal."

Still doesn't explain the monkey business. What the heck was that rope doing there in the first place?"

For years a contraversial website that makes outrageous statements about anyone that openly criticizes $cientology by writing pages of the apparent "laws and contraversial - actions" that they may have (or most likely haven't been) involved... Activities that took place over twenty years ago are even mentioned in an attempt to "dead agent" them. Although the site makes no reference to being owned by them there's someting odd going on! In the late 1940s, pulp writer L. Ron Hubbard declared:
"Writing for a penny a word is ridiculous. If a man really wants to make a million dollars, the best way would be to start his own religion" Reader's Digest reprint, May 1980, p.1

Hubbard then went onto create the "Church" of Scientology...

This description has been tailored to people who have never been Scientologists and seek a simple and short explanation as to what it is and why it is surrounded by controversy." In a Nutshell

The Church of Scientology is a vicious and dangerous cult that masquerades as a religion. Its purpose is to make money. It practices a variety of mind-control techniques on people lured into its midst to gain control over their money and their lives. Its aim is to take from them every penny that they have and can ever borrow and to also enslave them to further its wicked ends.
It was started in the 1950s by a science fiction writer named L. Ron Hubbard in fulfilment to his declared aim to start a religion to make money. It is an offshoot to a method of psychotherapy he concocted from various sources which he named "Dianetics". Dianetics is a form of regression therapy. It was then further expanded to appear more like a religion in order to enjoy tax benefits. He called it "Scientology".

Scientology is a confused concoction of crackpot, dangerously applied psychotherapy, oversimplified, idiotic and inapplicable rules and ideas and science-fiction drivel that is presented to its members (at the "advanced" levels) as profound spiritual truth.

The Harm it Does to a Person

The results of applying their crackpot psychotherapy (called "auditing") is to weaken the mind. The mind goes from a rational state to an irrational one as the delusional contents of the subconscious mind are brought to the surface and are assumed to be valid. It also makes a person more susceptible to suggestion since it submerges the critical thinking faculties of the mind into a partial subconscious state. It results in a permanent light hypnotic trance and so from thenceforth that person can be more easily controlled. The person will, to a much greater extent, believe and do whatever they are told. And of course this is used to the full in persuading them to hand over further money and dedicating themselves further to the cult.
The results of applying their oversimplified and inapplicable rules in life is to lose the ability to think rationally and logically. A person loses the ability to think for themselves and so they lose the ability to challenge incorrect ideas. This makes them easier to control. It also isolates and alienates the person from society so that they withdraw from normal society and into their "Scientology" society. This further increases their susceptibility to the influence of their group. They end up being afraid of society, believing all society to be controlled by a group of drug companies, psychiatrists and financiers all of whom report to more remote masters. In other words they are in a state of mass paranoia. They therefore avoid reading newspapers and the like since they fear it will disturb their safe Scientology world. It is a downward spiral into madness.

The science fiction content of Scientology is revealed to them after they have reached the state they call "Clear", meaning freed from the aberrations of the mind. However, perhaps "brainwashed" would be a more applicable word to describe the mental state of someone who has survived the near entire delusional contents of their subconscious mind brought to the surface and presented to them as "truth". On the "advanced" levels (called OT levels) above the state of "Clear" they encounter the story of Xenu. Xenu was supposed to have gathered up all the overpopulation in this sector of the galaxy, brought them to Earth and then exterminated them using hydrogen bombs. The souls of these murdered people are then supposed to infest the body of everyone. They are called "body thetans". On the advanced levels of Scientology a person "audits out" these body thetans telepathically by getting them to re-experience their being exterminated by hydrogen bombs. So people on these levels assume all their bad thoughts and faulty memories are due to these body thetans infesting every part of their body and influencing them mentally. Many Scientologists go raving mad at this point if they have not done so already.

The "Ethics" Trap

On the surface the Church of Scientology seems reasonable. The insane content of it is only revealed to a person when the early stuff has done its work and made them more susceptible. After a short while a person "believes" that Scientology is doing them good. They are then persuaded to help their new-found group further by donating money and/or working for the organisation for almost no money. Many people do exactly that.
"Ethics" is used to good effect to trap a person. A person’s natural tendency to do good is worked upon. Yes - they want to be more ethical, but what is ethical? This is where a clever trick is pulled! "Ethics" is redefined by Scientology in such a way that to be ethical is to be a better Scientologist and obey the "church". Young people, not yet made cynical through the machinations of life and politics, are very keen to contribute to the world and to be ethical. So the "ethics" trick works easily into persuading them to join the "church". Many of them join an elite group called the "Sea Org" where they become brainwashed slaves. There they work a hundred hour week for almost no pay. There they are subject to every cruel whim of their masters. It is a living hell that they endure because of the conditioning they have received and this now perverted sense of ethics that they have accepted. The "Sea Org" is the ultimate in brainwashed slavery. They are expected to work harder and harder to achieve ever higher targets of production. If they fail to meet their targets there are various penalties. One of them is to be put onto a diet of beans and rice and to miss sleep. Another is to be sentenced to a period on the RPF (Rehabilitation Project Force). This is the equivalent to "hard labour". Such is the extent of their brainwashing that they actually write "success stories" when they complete their sentences.

Brainwashing Bites Back

There is no doubt at all that L. Ron Hubbard incorporated brainwashing techniques into Scientology to put people under his control. He even wrote a "brainwashing manual" which is still in existence today. However there was a cruel twist in his scheme. He fell victim of it himself. In creating his devoted slaves, the Sea Org, he created an audience that believed every word he said. Now L. Ron Hubbard had an over-active imagination plus delusions of grandeur. The negative feedback he would obtain by being part of normal society was replaced by the positive feedback from his devoted followers. Through this his imagination got the better of him and combined with his delusions of grandeur, his thinking became increasingly bizarre which, on acceptance, led on to more bizarre thinking and the idea that he and Scientology had the job of saving the entire universe He wanted to take over the world in order to further Scientology’s aims to save the universe and so branches of Scientology were set up to try to influence governments and gain positions where they could influence to world to a high degree. So what started out as a mass confidence trick backed up with brainwashing became a monstrous and insane organisation with fantastic, fanatical ideals. Because of this change, the Church of Scientology survived the death of their founder. It is like a runaway monster machine that tramples on society and peoples lives that is very difficult to stop.

Stop the Monster

The whole machinery called the "Church of Scientology" needs to be jammed somehow so that more people do not get sucked in and the people already in it have a chance to get out. We must not forget the people already in this "church". Although they are the ones perpetrating this crime they are also the victims. They need our help as well.
And here we come to the "War on the Internet".

The people who are copying their material and webbing it are using the huge accessibility of the world-wide web to get information out to people to warn them of the insanity and danger of this cult. They are doing it for the public good. The hope is that if they can get this information out to the public and make it broadly known then people will be forewarned and will not join the cult. If they can starve the cult of new members in this way then the whole organisation may collapse and then the existing members can be helped to return to society. But of course the people within the cult believe only their own founders interpretation of things so they use every means they can to stop this. Usually the method they use is harassment through lengthy and expensive legal processes. Sometimes it is physical harassment. Sometimes worse!

The people who post and host the copyrighted and confidential works of Scientology are risking themselves to help warn the public about the dangers of Scientology. They have a strong sense of public duty and care for their fellow men. They are breaking copyright laws it is true but they are acting out of conscience and out of high human ideals. The actor was among the contenders announced on Monday for the annual Razzie Awards, which "honor" the worst achievements in film.

Cruise will compete for the year's worst actor award with Will Ferrell ("Bewitched," "Kicking & Screaming"), Jamie Kennedy ("Son of the Mask"), Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson ("Doom") and Rob Schneider ("Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo").

The nominees were announced by The Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, a tongue-in-cheek organization that claims more than 700 voting members.

Foundation head John Wilson said in an interview he did not think Cruise's portrayal of a working-class man in "War of the Worlds" was particularly credible.

While there were arguably worse performances, Cruise's off-screen antics, either in support of Scientology, or in the throes of passion with new girlfriend Katie Holmes, ensured he made the grade, Wilson said.

Indeed, Cruise was nominated twice in the new category of most tiresome tabloid target, which salutes "the celebs we're all sick and tired of," Wilson said.

Cruise is already a Razzie winner, sharing the honor with Brad Pitt for worst screen couple in "Interview with the Vampire." He was also nominated for the film "Cocktail."

Actresses Jenny McCarthy and Jessica Simpson also picked up three nominations. McCarthy was cited for worst actress, worst screen couple and worst screenplay for "Dirty Love." Simpson will also vie for worst screen couple, as well as worst supporting actress as Daisy Duke in "The Dukes of Hazard."

"Son of the Mask," a sequel to the 1994 Jim Carrey hit, led the nominated films with eight mentions. Unfortunately for the producers, Carrey did not reprise his role in the new film and no one went to see it.

According to OK! The Christmas period was particularly fraught for the pair; Cruise decided to stay at Katies parents house for the holidays to mend fences with the family of his fiancée, who so far have been rather opposed to their darling daughter's choice of man.

However, a close friend told an American mag that: Tom and Katie ended up leaving three days earlier than planned. Katie was in tears, but thats standard when it comes to dealing with family matters and Tom.

UK TV viewers will not get to see an episode of South Park which shows Nicole Kidman and fellow Scientologist John Travolta attempting to coax a fictional Tom Cruise character out of a closet, with Kidman saying: "Don't you think this has gone on long enough? It's time for you to come out of the closet. You're not fooling anyone."

Naturally, the robustly heterosexual Top Gun star took exception to this when Trapped in the Closet aired in the US. The episode also showed Stan - believed by the Cruise character to be the reincarnation of Scientology founder L Ron Hubbard - having a pop at Cruise's acting abilities, and Cruise reportedly waved the legal big stick at Paramount and threatened to sue if the offending programme was ever shown again.

An insider said: "Tom is famously very litigious and will go to great lengths to protect his reputation. Tom was said not to like the episode and Paramount just didn't dare risk showing it again. It's a shame that UK audiences will never see it because it's very funny." ®

Tom Cruise slammed over Scientology cure

Tom Cruise has been slammed by fire-fighters injured in the 9/11 attacks - for suggesting they use Scientology to heal themselves.

The actor has reportedly urged people suffering the effects of smoke inhalation from the terrorist attacks to quit using their medication and inhalers - and start drinking cooking oil.

The "purification" programme also advises people to take large doses of niacin and indulge in plenty of saunas.

The Hollywood heavyweight - a co-founder of the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project - has also supported a new Scientology clinic preaching these remedies.

However, doctors have reportedly dismissed the treatment as "quackery".

Deputy Fire Commissioner Frank Gribbon told PageSix.com: "If our doctors are prescribing medication, and they (Scientologists) are saying, 'don't take it', that's a problem for us."

He also claimed the department's deputy chief medical officer Dr David Prezant is against the treatment.

He said: "He (Prezant) is not pleased when patients are advised to disobey doctors' orders. That's where he drew the line."

Scientology devotee Tom - who is engaged to actress Katie Holmes, who is pregnant with their first baby together - has defended the purification process, claiming: "More than 500 individuals have recovered health and job fitness through this project."

And she was pregnant.

Okay, I only put this in to make a point. Work with me here on some math. At last I heard, Mike Rinder quoted the Church membership at ten million worldwide. (Our facts state 55,000 in the US so maybe 80,000 worldwide but we'll leave that for now). So, ten million members, all requiring auditing in each of the scientology centers, and on top of that each member is meant to own not one, but two of these personally as well at home (ya know, in case of an EMERGENCY auditing required and your darn $5,000 E-meter's broken... ya got a spare! Just like Boy Scouts these Scientologists...) Ten million members, and their production facility pumps out 10,000 per year? Is it just me or does that mean it would take a minimum of 2000 years until they'll have enough? That's the thing about making up baloney stories Rinder, someone will always catch ya on the little details... (maybe he meant 10 million thetans???)

Cruise defends scientology trauma cure

Tom Cruise recently attended a fundraiser for the New York City Rescue Workers Detoxification Project, and has defended his comments about rescue workers needing to come off their post-trauma medication.

Cruise has been criticised for comments made after 9/11 which indicated that firefighters and other workers that had been exposed to potentially harmful chemicals in the air should pursue natural remedies rather than accepting drugs. The project was set up to help people find other remedies.

"I started this project out of the great respect I have for the courage and service of the rescue workers. (.) When I started this project I was in position where I knew I could help. I absolutely consider it an honor and a privilege to be here to help these men and women", Cruise said.

Doctors have dismissed the suggested treatments as inadequate however, and Deputy Fire Commissioner Frank Gribbon takes exception to the scientology interference: "If our doctors are prescribing medication, and they (Scientologists) are saying, 'don't take it', that's a problem for us."

'Jerry Maguire" buddies Tom Cruise and Cuba Gooding Jr. were partying just a few blocks apart Wednesday night - but they might as well have been on different planets.

You might say that Cruise was on Teegeeack, as members of his Church of Scientology sometimes refer to Earth. The "War of the Worlds" star and his fiancée, Katie Holmes, were at a Tribeca Rooftop benefit for the New York Rescue Workers Detoxification Project.

As we've told you before, that's the controversial program that treats victiams of smoke inhalation with a "purification rundown" that some doctors and FDNY officials have branded as "medically unproven."

In the past, reps for the project have played down its ties to Scientology. But there was no doubt that Cruise's party was a Church social. Pictures of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard hung near the bar, and each goody bag included one of his sacred texts.

Addressing about 150 guests who paid $6,250 a head (double that if they sat at his table), Cruise made no mention of the project's critics. Typically upbeat, he invited an NYPD officer and a U.S. Army major, both "program graduates," to testify about benefits of their treatment.

But even the most earnest Scientologist embraces the Yuletide. Holmes, clearly showing the baby the cuddling couple is expecting, rehearsed "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" and "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" with the Alex Donner Orchestra. With the help of Cruise's $50,000 gift, the evening raised $350,000. Alas, there wasn't time for Katie's carols.

Meanwhile, we ran into Gooding at a screening of his gripping new gang drama, "Dirty," hosted by producer Lee Daniels. Asked if he was headed to the Detox bash, Gooding told us, "This is the first I heard of it. Tom didn't call me. He don't call a brother no more!"

But, seriously, the Oscar winner assured us he and Cruise are still friends, and he wished him the best.

And, while Cruise and Holmes called it a night at around 11, Gooding partied on at PM in the Meatpacking District.

The actor, whose wife, Sara, recently gave birth to their third child, "was dancing, drinking Champagne and playing the drums all night," says a spy.

Hollywood superstar Tom Cruise has been criticized again for his Scientology believes regarding psychiatry, this time by the best-selling crime author Patricia Cornwell.

According to London Evening Standard newspaper, Cornwell, 49, the author of a popular series of crime novels featuring the fictional heroine "Dr. Kay Scarpetta", declared that Cruise's preaches about the evil of anti-depressants, could badly influence his young naïve fans.

Cornwell says, "There are misconceptions about psychology, especially when people out there like Tom Cruise say there's no evidence of chemical imbalance and psychiatric disorders."

"There's going to be some girl or boy who worships this megastar, who decides, 'I'm not going to take my anti-depressants because Tom Cruise said I don't need drugs.'"

This is not the first time for Cruise to be criticized for his Scientology believes. He openly criticized actress Brooke Shields for using the drug Paxil, an anti-depressant, which Shields claims helped her recover from post-partum depression after the birth of her daughter in 2003.

Brooke Shields slammed back the superstar, subsequently describing Cruise's comments as "irresponsible and dangerous".

Scientomogy is a parody of Scientology; specifically of Tom Cruise and his involvement with it.

The concept was created by New Zealand webmaster Glen Stollery on a website called scientomogy.info in 2005. The website drew worldwide headlines when the Church of Scientology's attorneys Moxon & Kobrin contacted Stollery, claiming his parody was an infringement of their copyright, despite being a different word by one letter.

In September 2005 the Church of Scientology issued a cease and desist order to Stollery demanding he shut down the site and transfer ownership to the Church, threatening him with a $100,000 lawsuit. The Church's law firm stated that "Scientomogy" would cause a likelihood of confusion with their own, violating the Lanham Act, 15 U.S.C. 1125(a).

Stollery originally relented and agreed to change the domain name to passionofcruise.info however in his response made it clear: "We also have a Full Disclaimer at the top of the front page and in the website's meta-tags stating that there is no connection between ourselves and the church. Not to mention the fact that the site is completely non-commercial in nature, and does not generate a single cent of revenue nor offers any services of any kind. It is a parody site showing the recent lunacy of Tom Cruise - confusion of any kind with their site is literally impossible."[1]

After consulting lawyers in October 2005 Stollery responded once againto the church however with a far more agressive stance. Now believing the accusation to be completely frivolous Glen publicly refused challenging the Church in a public statement "I'm keeping my domain, see you in court" Ironically the threats took ScienTOMogy.info overnight from around 100 hits per day to over 14 million hits in a two week period, making the Alexa Internet list of "Top 5 fastest growing websites in the world" over the period. Glen is still waiting for the Church's response to his challenge.

The list is a collection of some of the year's worst public relations gaffes. The "winners" for 2005:

1. CRUISE, OUT-OF-CONTROL

Tom Cruise's "War of the Worlds" press tour blew up on the "Today" show after he got on his Scientology soap box and lit into host Matt Lauer. Cruise's diatribe against psychiatry included criticizing Brooke Shields for the medication she received during her post-pregnancy depression. The press jumped all over Cruise, and so did Shields. In a New York Times op-ed, Shields called his remarks "a disservice to mothers everywhere." Cruise's other bizarre antics in '05, including Oprah Winfrey's sofa jumping escapade to show his love for actress Katie Holmes, also earned him public ridicule. "Sure they're in Love --- with Publicity," headlined the Boston Globe. PR Week said, "The more you jump up and down about it, the less people believe it's the real thing."

2. PAT ROBERTSON'S DIPLOMACY

Uncle Sam's relations with oil rich Venezuela worsened after televangelist Pat Robertson suggested the U.S. 'take out' its president Hugo Chavez. The rather un-Christian comments ignited fire and brimstone from the world's press and lent credibility to Chavez' contention that President Bush, somewhat of an evangelical in his own right, is out to get him. "He is that rare preacher who has invited the nation not to pray together, but to prey together," wrote Tom Teepen in the San Jose Mercury News.

3. UAW UNWELCOMES MARINES

Organized labor is having enough trouble without alienating the U.S. Marines. United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger barred Marine reservists from its parking lot if they drove foreign-made cars or sport pro-Bush bumper stickers. The Marines had parked there for years because they train nearby. Gettelfinger apologized for the unpatriotic ambush after the Michigan press played the story, but the Marines said they would find alternative parking. "In trying to stiff the Marines, the union signaled that its petty political concerns trump the needs of the armed forces and the sanctity of the voting booth," wrote Daniel Howes in the Detroit News.

4. NO BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT FROM BENEFIT MANAGEMENT COMPANY

It appears that Michigan employee-benefits firm Benefit Management Administrators Inc. needs help managing its own employees. The company fired Suzette Boler for, among other things, taking too much time to say good-bye to her husband who left to fight in Iraq, according to an Associated Press story. The poorly timed pink slip fueled public outrage forcing the company to lock its doors and turn off its phones. When the company's founder responded to TV station Channel 8 in Grand Rapids, he compounded the blunder by pressing additional complaints against her to justify the firing.

5. HARVARD'S SUMMERS STORM

Publicly expressing sentiments that women are not good at math and science is not the kind of stereotyping you might expect from Harvard. So when Harvard's president, Larry Summers, said gender differences are why fewer women than men excel in those areas, the school's outraged faculty and alumni called for his ouster. According to Business Week, "his remarks about women may make it hard for Harvard to recruit top female scientists," and "harm fund-raising" for much needed reforms.

FIVE hours a day in a steaming sauna for three weeks at a cost of just over £1,100...and my sullied soul will be purified. At least that's what I am promised.

Welcome to religion, Scientology-style.

For one month I have been following in the footsteps of the controversial cult's most famous torchbearer - Tom Cruise - to discover just what Katie Holmes, his 26-year-old pregnant fiancee, is facing as one of the Church of Scientology's latest recruits.

I resolve to tell them I am pregnant too. Is it really true I would have to give birth in absolute silence? And what other strange rites - apart from the sauna purification programme - would I have to follow?

A High Court judge once dismissed the organisation as "corrupt, sinister and dangerous" but I arrive at their London HQ in Tottenham Court Road prepared to be open-minded.

Over the course of the next few weeks I see and hear things that leave me feeling very uncomfortable.

I learn I should be silent in the presence of a sick child - even if an ambulance needs to be called. Instead of calling for help I would have to "find a bit of paper" and write down any instructions to a passer-by.

I am also asked to pass Scientology material to a teacher friend, to get the cult's message across to schools.

And I discover at least one member of staff is sometimes paid as little as £10 a week. Like many others, my first encounter with the Church is outside one of their centres. As I make my way towards the building I am accosted in the street.

"Hi!" and suddenly a face is beaming up at me. "Want a free stress test? All you need to do is answer a few questions and we can tell you exactly what areas in your life are stressing you out the most," says the girl. "Then we can tell you how to combat them."

This is Louise. "Please sit down," she says, before I have even had a chance to answer. The "test" is set up outside the front entrance. I am asked to hold two metal handles attached to to a machine with a dial. After a series of questions, it's determined that I am "highly stressed".

"You're at the right place," says Louise. "We can restore calm and control over your life." Inside, most of the staff are young and several are from overseas. Louise, 24, is from Australia and has been working here two years.

She instantly probes me about my life. "What's the relationship like with your boyfriend? Your mother?" I feel uncomfortable, but strangely compelled to reveal some of my deepest secrets to a complete stranger.

Louise says my troubles will be eased by taking a number of courses on offer at the centre. They are designed by the cult's founder, science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, who died in 1982. He established the Church of Scientology in the 1950s after claiming to have discovered the mysterious "truth" about human existence. I am introduced to a procedure called "auditing". It's a crude form of counselling which involves sitting opposite a person, getting them to close their eyes before taking them back to a past experience.

You are supposed to take them through the experience time after time until they become "cheerful" about it.

As I am new, I am sent for a practice session. I am not expecting to find myself face-to-face with a 3ft soft toy in the form of Winnie the Pooh.

The bear sits opposite me. Behind him sits Mike, who will answer on the bear's behalf. I address the bear and read from a card of instructions. "Please locate an incident you feel comfortable facing," I say to the bear, trying hard not to laugh. "Well, there is this one time," says the bear, or rather Mike. "My pot of honey was stolen. It really upset me." "Very good," I read, from the card. "Go to the beginning of that incident and go through it and say what is happening as you go along."

"OK," says the bear. 'Well I was out walking...' And so it goes on. For half an hour. I am now apparently ready to listen and audit a "real-life" person.

Louise calls me the next day and asks me to come in. At the centre I meet Ajay, who has big problems. With no professional training I talk to him about his strict Hindu background, and how he is struggling to accept that his virgin girlfriend dated men before him. I can't voice an opinion. Afterwards Ajay says he feels better for talking about it, but nothing has really been resolved. Edith, who had been supervising us, dismisses his concerns by telling him he simply needs more "auditing".

Ajay and I had paid a fee of £34 for starting the beginner's auditing course. If we want more auditing we will have to pay around £15 a session. Next in the programme is "Purification" - the sauna treatment. To reverse the spiritual and mental effects of drug use, you are encouraged to sit in a hot sauna for up to five hours a day for up to 21 days.

This will apparently rid the body of toxins and focus the mind. It will cost £965 - but the books and vitamins needed on top come to an extra £150. Later I discover that no scientific evidence exists to prove the sauna treatment works.

I ask for information regarding pregnancy. I am introduced to Sarah, a senior course administrator at the centre and a mother of five.

She tells me some very odd things. "The main thing to do when you're pregnant is to learn to keep silent if you hurt yourself. Anything you say can be registered in the baby's mind and may affect it later in life." She also tells me to avoid sex during pregnancy. "You might put stress on the baby or squash it and thereby cause an engram (negative experience in their memory)." Scientologists believe birth should be done in silence. I ask Sarah how she dealt with the pain.

"Not easy," she admits, "but it will save a lot of auditing in the future for the child." I ask about the belief that parents should not make a noise in the presence of an injured child.

Scientologists believe that anything a child or person hears during a painful experience will come back to haunt them later in life. How, I wonder, will Katie Holmes cope with not being able to whisper comforting words to her child when he or she is sick?

I mention a teacher friend of mine. Immediately a woman asks me whether I am able to get any Scientology literature to my friend, so she can take it into her school. I say I don't feel comfortable with this.

But by the end of the third week at the centre it is easy to see why Scientology is popular. I found a whole new set of friends who seemed to really care about me. If I am late or miss a session they call me. When my car window is smashed by vandals I get three phone calls within a couple of hours asking how I am.

I decide to take up an invite to the Church of Scientology's UK headquarters in East Grinstead, West Sussex. To my amazement, I find myself among 5,000 cheering and chanting followers in a sumptuously-decorated marquee.

I am even more amazed to see Tom Cruise himself has flown in, bringing a bemused-looking Katie with him. Another two celebrity Scientologists, John Travolta and his wife Kelly Preston, are there too, but I can't get anywhere near any of them because they are in the VIP section.

Next day, back at the centre, I'm offered a personality test - the results suggest I am "very unbalanced". I'm also told I am irresponsible, depressed, and highly critical. Louise suggests I take one of their "Personal Values and Integrity" courses - at a cost of £48. Over a coffee Louise confides that as a staff member she gets benefits, including free "auditing" and training. To my dismay, she says sometimes she earns as little as £10 a week.

It is clear that Louise and her colleagues (who work at the lower ends of the organisation) are on a bonus-style scheme. If they bring in a lot of people like me, and sell a lot of courses and books, they earn more money.

Louise believes in "the cause". Unfortunately for her, I don't. I have found the whole experience very disturbing and this was where I parted company with Scientology.

Katie Holmes might have bagged one of the most eligible men in the Church but I don't envy her one tiny bit.

Tom Cruise and pregnant fiance Katie Holmes seem to be ignoring the panic that has swept over China regarding the deadly avian flu epidemic during their stay in Shanghai.

The 43-year-old actor is filming the third instalment of the Mission: Impossible movie series and wants Katie, 26, by his side.

Cruise and Holmes have not appeared concerned that the country has had to destroy 20 million fowl this year to stem the plague that has so far killed 68 people in Asia.

According to medical expert Dr. Erika Schwartz, who, according to The National Enquirer, has not treated Katie but has followed her pregnancy, saying: "It's not wise for Katie to take such risks. Tom has to be there for work, but she does not. She is risking the health of her unborn baby as well as her own."

'Mission Impossible' star Tom Cruise has been slammed for buying a sonogram machine for his pregnant fiancé Katie Holmes, with a warning from health experts that he's putting his unborn baby at risk.

According to IMDb.com, officials at the American College of Radiology (ACR) are concerned by Cruise's revelation that he bought the device to monitor his child's progress, and they're even warning him that he could be breaking the law if he does the scans himself.

Dr. Carol M. Rumack of the ACR Ultrasound Commission said: "Untrained people, even if they have the financial means, should not buy, or be allowed to buy and operate, ultrasound machines which are, in fact, medical devices and should not be used without a medical indication.

"The ACR is concerned that Tom Cruise has been badly advised regarding the use and potential abuse of ultrasound.

Love-struck Hollywood megastar Tom Cruise wants to tie the knot with fiancée Katie Holmes next summer. The couple plan to get married, reportedly in the Dominican Republic or Jamaica, after Cruise finishes filming his latest movie, Mission: Impossible 3, with Lost director JJ Abrams.

Cruise told American TV host Barbara Walters that the couple was aiming for the summer but may have to wait until the autumn. By that time pregnant Holmes, 26, will have given birth to the couple's first child together. Cruise told Walters: "I do not have a film after Mission Impossible and that is a good time to get married."

The couple's first choice of a wedding venue, Cancun, was heavily damaged by Hurricane Wilma so other locations were being looked at. "We are going to get married next summer or early fall," the 43-year-old star said.

Last week, Cruise revealed that he'd bought a pricy ultrasound machine to see what his child looked like in the womb. South Park Mocks Tom Cruise, Scientology In Newest Episode

You know, they say South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone go too far. Well, admittedly they sometimes do but they are also extremely funny and irreverent. No one and no topic is sacred. They are equal opportunity insulters and frankly quite bright as well.

Sure, the Jesus and Friends bit is offensive to me as a Christian but on the other hand the Satan episodes are rather humorous.

The duo's most recent targets are none other than Tom Cruise and Scientology. They set their crudely animated sights on Scientology and Tom Cruise-topics previously deemed "off limits" due to the actor's close ties to Comedy Central's sister company, Paramount Pictures.

The episode starts off with Stan visiting a Church office where he is hailed as the reincarnation of L. Ron Hubbard by the leaders of Scientology because of his ot-9 results on the Churches E-meter test. Several Hollywood A-listers gather outside Stan's house, with Tom Cruise going in to talk to the 'Prophet.' Cruise asks Stan what

he thinks of him as an actor and Stan simply says "You're O.K., I mean you're not Leonardo DiCaprio or Napolean Dynamite or anything." To which Cruise responds by saying: "I'm a failure in the eyes of the Prophet" and locks himself in the closet. Cruise is then begged to 'Come out of the Closet Tom.'

Hilarious.

Cruise won't come out so John Travolta, Nicole Kidman and R. Kelly go in to try and persuade him. All end up joining him in the closet except for Kidman.

Meanwhile, the head of the church reveals the Secret doctrine of life behind Scientology to Stan. He goes on to tell Stan that the reasons for everyone's woes in the world are because the Evil Lord Xenu frozen some alien souls and dumped them into a volcano in ancient Hawaii. The alien's souls thawed and found human hosts at the dawn of time, inflicting the woes of the world on man. While this story is being told the words "Scientologists really believe this" is shown in various ways on the screen.

Stan eventually buys in and sets his pen to write down new "rules" and "laws." Kyle, Cartman and Kenny try to talk some sense into Stan - "L. Ron Hubbard is a sci-fi writer that got busted by Feds for living with boys on a boat numerous times," says Kyle.

Stan comes out dressed like Caesar 'as the reincarnate of L. Ron Hubbard'.. but Stan, after realizing that the Church was only in it for the money, just can't go through with perpetuating the lie.

"Scientology is just a bug fat global scam," Stan says.

Cruise comes out of the closet [Along with Travolta and R.Kelly] and threatens to sue Stan saying: "I'll sue you in England"

The unwanted cartoon cameo sure comes at a rough time for Cruise. The actor recently dumped his career-wrecking publicist sister Lee Anne DeVette, and has been trying to restore his image with help from Rogers & Cowan spin-masters Paul Bloch and Arnold Robinson.

Comedy Central's parent company, Viacom - which also owns Paramount - probably weren't too keen either about seeing its studio's big-money Mission Impossible 3 star ridiculed yet again.

Knowing Parker and Stone, they probably threatened to walk out if they weren't allowed to do their irreverent thing.

Comedy Central spokesman Tony Fox told Radaronline that he didn't know any details of the show because, "these guys literally write and rewrite the episode almost right up to the moment it airs." Asked whether taking potshots at Cruise and Scientology was a wise move, Fox said the network has Stone and Parker's back: "If you know South Park, they are free and have been free to satirize anybody and anything they want to. They've made fun of MTV, they've made fun of Viacom, they've made fun of Comedy Central, and we've never interfered with them."

While on the Oprah show Cruise jumped up and down on the sofa declaring his love for Holmes while Oprah watched on in disbelief – mainly because she did not believe the romance was real.

Tom Cruise has hired veteran publicist and Rogers and Cowan co-chairman Paul Bloch to handle his publicity activities, including those for Cruise-Wagner Prods.

Move replaces Cruise's sister, Lee Anne DeVette, who had been serving as his publicist since March '04, when he parted ways with longtime rep, PMK/HBH's Pat Kingsley.

DeVette has been a professional associate of Cruise's for years, working alongside the actor at his production company Cruise-Wagner Prods. Before taking the lead as his publicist last year, she focused on the marketing and publicity of his films. With the current change, she will completely step away from CWP activities and segue to job in which she will oversee the operations and planned expansion of Cruise's charitable work.

"Lee Anne has done a wonderful job on behalf of myself and Cruise-Wagner Prods. over the last few years," Cruise said in a statement. "But she has always expressed a desire to oversee and expand the day-to-day activities of my charitable endeavors. With our current plans to increase those endeavors, and Cruise-Wagner's increased production slate of film and television projects, this seemed the appropriate time to make that segue and bring Rogers and Cowan on board to handle mine and the company's entertainment-related publicity needs."

DeVette said: "I know how important Tom's charitable goals are to him, and I look forward to assisting in raising the profile of the good works that he does on behalf of children's health issues, mentoring, literacy and other social reforms, as well as the general betterment of the human condition."

Cruise, his comments and his behavior have recently been battered by the media.

With Bloch, Cruise joins a roster that includes John Travolta, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone, Billy Bob Thornton, Geena Davis, Anthony Hopkins, Jerry Bruckheimer, Priscilla and Lisa Marie Presley, Steve Bing, Chris Tucker, Michael Keaton and David and Victoria Beckham.

IMHO, you've no reason to transfer it to the Scientology people if:

a) they only asked nicely, and b) you really intend to use it for as

long as possible. :)

You may or may not know this already. But if your'e outside the

US, the US' ACPA law (which fines guilty parties up to $100K per

name) hardly applies to you, I read you're based in NZ. (?)

I practically wrote in my blog how you should be able to keep the

domain name. Use those tips if you haven't learned any of them

since then.

The Scientology gods work in strange ways. Star is reporting that Katie Holmes took a trip to freaksville when Tom Cruise insisted on her signing a pre-nuptial agreement. Katie apparently has wanted to marry the resolutely non-gay Cruise since she was a teenager. Indeed, Star describes her as being "head over heels" in love with him. The bump she's showing these days does make it look as though she had her heels over her head at least once. So she took the insistence on a pre-nuptial agreement as a message that Tom does not love her as much as she loves him. Sham is a four-letter word, but for these two there seems to be no shame in it. Katie is said to have been placated by Tom's explanation that he wants the pre-nuptial agreement to make sure she is always taken care of. And you thought such questions were settled in a Last Will and Testament. Granting that the girl has half a brain, you have to assume she's using the missing half when she accepts Tom's explanation. New Zealand website owner responds to the Church of Scientology's lawsuit threat; "We're keeping our domain... see you in court"

Last month the Church of Scientology issued a cease and desist order to the New Zealand owner of a Tom Cruise parody website, www.scientomogy.info demanding they shut down the site and transfer ownership to the Church or face a law suit of up to $100,000. Via email, the Church's law firm Moxon & Kobrin stated the website domain was an infringement of their trademark and would cause a "likelihood of confusion" with their own, breaking federal law, specifically citing The Lanham Act , 15 U.S.C. 1125(a).

The Lanham Act contains the federal statutes governing trademark law in the United States and the church would have to prove factors such as "proof of actual confusion" "product types, proximity and marketing", "their respective appearance and meanings", and "(bad) intention behind selecting the mark"

Glen Stollery, the website's owner has now hit back at the church stating "We have researched this and believe their claims are completely without merit. The church can provide no proof as to any confusion regarding the sites. For instance, scientology.info does not even exist, so compared to scienTOMogy.info it is hardly a matter of someone hitting the wrong key. We also have a Full Disclaimer at the top of the front page and in the website's meta-tags stating that there is no connection between ourselves and the church. Not to mention the fact that the site is completely non-commercial in nature, and does not generate a single cent of revenue nor offers any services of any kind. It is a parody site showing the recent lunacy of Tom Cruise - confusion of any kind with their site is literally impossible."

Stollery continues "The non-commercial use of a trademark as the domain name of a website — the subject of which is consumer commentary about the products and services represented by the mark — does not constitute infringement under the Lanham Act." Bosley Medical Institute v. Kremer (9th Cir., Apr. 4, 2005). In this instance, we are even one step further removed as their trademark is "scientology" not "scienTOMogy" Their claims are completely frivolous."

If this is the case then it would not be the first time the law firm would be found guilty of filing frivolous complaints. In 1994, Helena Kobrin of Moxon & Kobrin, counsel for the Church of Scientology, was ordered to pay sanctions in the total sum of $17,775 for filing a frivolous complaint in federal court. Stollery states on his website that he believes this is simply a way of "scaring any critics into instantly backing down at the prospect of costly lawsuits regardless of their innocence." In closing he says to the church "I'm calling your bluff. File your lawsuit we're keeping our domain... see you in court"

Man, this story totally blows my Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie W magazine one out of the water. The Church of Scientology has threatened legal action against a New Zealand-based website spoofing Tom Cruise. ScienTOMogy.info has received a cease and desist (C&D) letter from one of the church's legal representatives, Ava Paquette of Moxon & Kobrin. Ava sent this letter via an AOL email address, so we've learned her screenname is AMPaquette. Try IM-ing Ava sometime and let me know how it goes. (Isn't it more professional for legal offices to have their own domain-based email rather than communicate via AOL?) Here's a hilarious excerpt from the C&D --

You are hereby on notice that the registration and use of this domain name [ScienTOMogy.info] in this fashion has caused your name to be falsely associated with our client's registered mark, SCIENTOLOGY, as owner and creates a likelihood of confusion as to the source or sponsorship of this domain name in violation of United States state and federal law... The fact that you have changed one letter (" m" instead of "l") does not protect you from trademark infringement.

Wasn't that great? That almost tops the 4815162342 spelling and grammar mistakes from my own C&D. But sadly, the C&D isn't even the half of it. The owner of ScienTOMogy.info has been deluged with emails after emails after emails after phone calls after phone calls after phone calls. If that wasn't enough, Scientology henchmen obtained the website owner's home address and have been visiting his home all hours of the day! It's gotten so bad that the owner had to install security cameras in front of his home to monitor suveillance! HOW FREAKING AWESOME IS THAT? I'm sure more updates will be posted on ScienTOMogy.info.

Here's the backstory -- The Church of Scientology is notorious for pursing legal action under the name of "Religious Technology Center" (RTC). One C&D demanded a Mr. Shand to remove confidential, unpublished, copyrighted photographs belongong to L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of The Church of Scientology. And similar to scienTOMogy.info, another C&D demanded that the ownership of truthaboutscientology.com be transferred over to them.

Now here's the back-backstory -- One of the owners of legal office Moxon & Kobrin is Helena Kobrin. Helena has been sanctioned in the past for bringing up frivolous actions.

On May 2, 1994, Helena Kobrin, counsel for the Church of Scientology, was ordered to pay sanctions in the total sum of $17,775 for filing a frivolous complaint in federal court.

But don't feel so bad, Bowles & Moxon only had to pay a portion of that.

Defendants shall recover from Attorney Helena K. Kobrin and the law firm of Bowles & Moxon, jointly and severally, monetary sanctions under Rule 11 in the sum of $8,887.50, as partial reimbursement for attorneys' fees incurred in defending against the amended complaint.

A New Zealand website spoofing Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and his religion of choice is facing legal action from the Church of Scientology.

The church is not amused by scienTOMogy - which features spoof videos of the star - and says it is breaching copyright.

When Cruise engaged in some sofa stomping, he coined a new phrase called jumping the couch - the defining moment when someone has gone of the deep end.

From that moment Glen Stollery has been chronicling Cruise's crusade to promote the Scientology Church.

The church is not amused however and says the website name is too similar to its own.

It has sent an impressive legal letter to the Aucklander ordering him to turn over the website name to them or face the consequences of a $100,000 law suit.

"There's nothing wrong with what I've done. It makes it very clear it's not a scientology site," Stollery says.

The potential law suit has turned scienTOMogy into a cult of its own, with entertainment and gossip sites running the story.

"He's criticising but it's clear he's not associated with them and my gut feeling is a court would come down on the side that this is fair criticism," says intellectual property lawyer Earl Gray.

The site has gone from having 100 hits a day to more than a million in a matter of hours.

The church says it has no problem with satirical sites but the name scienTOMogy has to go.

"Trademark law says just changing one letter is still violating the trademark," says Scientology spokesman Mike Ferriss.

Stollery will change the website name to Passion of Cruise but says he won't be relinquishing the scienTOMogy name to the church.

A Tom Cruise bio by the author of books on Princess Diana, Madonna and Monica Lewinsky is bound to upset the defenders of his faith at the Church of Scientology.

Tom Cruise has a new biographer - even though he probably doesn't want one.

Andrew Morton - who scaled the best-seller lists with books about Princess Diana, Madonna and Monica Lewinsky - is digging for fresh bits about the diminutive box-office Goliath.

A source at St. Martin's Press, which published the Lewinsky and Madonna books, tells us it hopes to bring out the book next fall, but the house doesn't seem eager to bugle the deal.

That could be because Morton, who enjoyed the full cooperation of Di and Monica, is not likely to get much from Cruise. In fact, Morton is probably bracing himself for interference from the actor's protectors at the Church of Scientology. Last week at an L.A. restaurant, the former Daily Mail reporter was spotted debriefing private eye Paul Barresi and attorney Graham Berry, reports radaronline.com.

Baressi actually did Cruise a favor in 2002, when he helped put the kibosh on a story peddled by a porn actor who claimed he'd been intimate with Cruise.

But there are few people Scientologists loathe more than Berry, who represented a psychiatrist quoted in Time's scorching 1991 Scientology story in a libel suit.

Berry wouldn't discuss what he and Morton talked about, but told us that "Cruise can be compared to Charles Lindbergh and his support of Nazi Germany."

Cruise's sister and publicist, Lee Anne De Vette, didn't return a call by deadline.

Recently, the church's lawyers threatened to sue ScienTomogy.info, a site that pokes fun at Cruise and his faith, for copyright infringement. Since then, the site's creator, New Zealander Gary Stollery [sic], has posted a disclaimer on his Web page, explaining that the site is a joke. Still, he's received mass E-mails, late-night cell-phone calls and even house visits from church members looking to "explain" the sect to him.

ScienTOMogy.info has received cease and desist letters from the church, threatening to sue the New Zealand-based Web site for copyright infringement, according to various sources.

“You are hereby on notice that the registration and use of this domain name in this fashion has caused your name to be falsely associated with our client’s registered mark, SCIENTOLOGY,” notes a legal letter posted online. “The fact that you have changed one letter (“m” instead of “l”) does not protect you from trademark infringement.”

The site — which mercilessly ridicules Cruise, his engagement, and his devotion to the controversial religion — has posted a disclaimer of sorts:

What’s even more disgusting about the Church of Scientology’s oh-so-scientific campaign against free speech--something the Internet is all about, by the way--is that ScienTOMogy is only part satire, and what is satire is clearly labelled “SATIRE.” Two-thirds of the main page consists exclusively of downloadable video evidence of Tom’s manic panic to save the world from, I don’t know, rational thinking? There’s the Matt Lauer interview, the Oprah interview, the Access Hollywood interview...even a press conference or two thrown in for good measure. How exactly does the “Church” of Scientology plan to prosecute this website for defamation of character when the bulk of their “defamation” consists of their own star client’s televised insanity?

And if these people have the answers to complete enlightenment, then what the fuck do they need to threaten their detractors for? If they’re so scientific, then they would welcome a conversation that allows all perspectives--even those that choose to voice their criticism through satire, a time-honored method of illuminating the weaknesses of a society or school of thought. If they’re actually a “church”, whatever happened to forgiveness and compassion? They might not agree with it, but in the spirit of generosity, shouldn’t they just let it go?

It’s interesting how they’re apparently not a cult, and yet nothing about them is remotely charitable, humanitarian, or vaguely thick-skinned. I never hear about the Church of Scientology giving money and resources to those in need outside of their own organization. I never hear about them counseling people who are feeling lost or in crisis to seek help. I never heard about them giving money after the tsunami, the hurricanes, or the earthquake. I never hear about them going into Calcutta and caring for the sick and dying with their own hands. I never hear about Scientologists who forsake all worldly pursuits in order to do the work of God. I do hear the Church of Scientology, and their little shaggy-haired manchild spokesperson, Tom Cruise, repeatedly telling people that they are ignorant, misguided and doomed to a life of failure, alienation and suffering because of these “hopeless” flaws that they are too stupid to fix for themselves. I hear the Church of Scientology, instead of giving to charity, repeatedly criticizing those in this country who could benefit most from it--children, women, the mentally ill, the homeless, the hungry, the lonely. Jesus, Moses, Muhammed, the Buddha--all these had a legacy of compassion, forgiveness, generosity and unconditional love. Even for morons like Tom Cruise, even for those who promote the dangerous ideals of Scientology; and this is why threatening the good-humored and well-meaning authors of a satirical website is the very pinnacle of their hypocrisy.

EDIT: Incidentally, we have reason to believe that changing one letter in the name of a domain does protect an author from copyright infringement.

UPDATE: The site is now apparently down. I think between all six billion of us earth residents we can scrape together the bus fare so a posse of at least ten can get to Los Angeles in time to shit on Mr. Cruise’s front porch before breakfast. Once again, it’s amazing how some of the most “enlightened” minds in the world are so incapable of acting like grownups, or you know, taking a joke?

Additionally, I’ve been surfing around the web getting different opinions on the legal merit to the claims of what appear to be the ambulance chasers of planet Xenu, but the general consensus is that the complaint is bullshit. Whatever legal grounds they may have are incredibly shaky, given that this site openly admits it is satirical in nature--and even directs to the real scientology site, a generous gesture to say the least.

Explain to me how, then, these attorneys managed to bully the site into submission? It really is quite the spirit of L. Ron Hubbard, isn’t it? Next thing you know these attorneys will be calling for cease-and-desist on the grounds that the author of a detracting webpage is a Communist, or worse, a Jew.

Let’s stop these fuckers, shall we? First step, carrying on Scientomogy’s crusade to get the Church of Scientology’s tax-exemption status revoked.

Looks like the Church of Scientology is not amused by a Web site spoofing it and Tom Cruise.

ScienTOMogy.info has received cease and desist letters from the church, threatening to sue the New Zealand-based Web site for copyright infringement, according to various sources.

“You are hereby on notice that the registration and use of this domain name in this fashion has caused your name to be falsely associated with our client’s registered mark, SCIENTOLOGY,” notes a legal letter posted online http://www.scientomogy.info/threats.htm. “The fact that you have changed one letter (“m” instead of “l”) does not protect you from trademark infringement.”

The site — which mercilessly ridicules Cruise, his engagement, and his devotion to the controversial religion — has posted a disclaimer of sorts:

“YOU MUST UNDERSTAND AND AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING BEFORE CONTINUING: Obviously www.scienTOMogy.info has ABSOLUTELY NO connection whatsoever with the Church of Scientology, it’s [sic] affiliated organizations or, needless-to-say, Tom Cruise. It is designed for commentary and criticism within the limits of Free Speech. All content should be treated as opinion and all trademarks/copyrighted material herein are owned by their respective trademark owners. The Scientology site is here. Thank you. You may continue…”

Tom Cruise’s future father-in-law apparently isn’t a happy camper.

Katie Holmes’s dad is said to be “very upset” because his unmarried daughter is pregnant with Cruise’s child. And, what’s more, the devoutly Catholic Martin Holmes reportedly is none-too-thrilled about his daughter’s involvement in her husband-to-be’s controversial religion, Scientology.

“[Martin Holmes] was very upset and got into a real spat with Katie,” the forthcoming issue of Life & Style Weekly quotes “a close friend” of Cruise as saying. “Tom had promised her parents that they would do the right thing and get married before any baby came along.” After scolding his daughter, according to the mag, Martin Holmes berated Cruise by declaring “You’re no good.”

“He said he and his wife were very upset by the news,” according to the source, “and demanded the pair get married quickly.”

Furthermore, a member of Christ the King Church, which the Holmes family belongs to, told L&S that Cruise and Holmes’ publicist, his sister Lee Anne DeVette, sent a letter to parishioners, asking them not to talk to reporters. Although a family friend told the mag that the Holmes family is thrilled by the news of a grandchild, they’re also concerned.

“It seemed like Katie was being controlled by Scientologists,” the friend told L&S. “Now they wonder if it’s a Rosemary’s Baby situation, where Katie is being groomed to provide Tom with a child.”

DeVette didn’t respond to The Scoop’s repeated requests for comment.

Tom Cruise: Cruising for a bruising with the paparazzi

Tom Cruise is the latest celeb to be involved in a clash with paparazzi.

Cruise's bodyguard got into an altercation with photographers last week outside the Scientology Celebrity Centre in Los Angeles after paparazzi followed him to the center during a break in shooting "Mission Impossible."

The photographer swarmed around the center and a security guard went out to photograph the crowd of lensmen. But a Scientology spokesman disputes an account from ContactMusic that suggests that the incident got ugly when one of the paparazzi tried to swipe the guard's camera.

"The paparazzi were outside our property and our security guard went to photograph him out of concern for the safety of our parishioners," Scientology Celebrity Centre spokesman Greg LaClaire told The Scoop. "[Later] our security officer drove away and was at a stop light on a corner. While he was sitting at the stop light, the paparazzi jumped thru the passenger window and started beating him. Our security officer defended himself as best he could and then made a citizen arrest on felony charges of battery. He held [the paparazzi] until the police came."

Cruise's rep didn't respond to requests for comment.

Katie Holmes fired her publicist of nearly eight years on Tuesday. During her conversation with Leslie Sloane-Zelnick, Holmes did not mention that she was pregnant by fiancé Tom Cruise. The next day, the news broke.

In short order since meeting Cruise in April, Holmes has now fired her manager, changed agents and discharged her publicist. All had been her longtime allies. And lets not forget the broken engagement back in March to actor Chris Klein. Thats a lot of activity in less than a year.

As good Scientologiststs, Tom and Katie will need to feed their new bundle of joy per LRH or a trip to Ethics will be in store. First, skinny little Katie needs to realize that she, and all other modern women, are not good "Guernsey type" mothers, i.e. milk cows, according to Ron, and that is why Katie cannot breast feed her new baby:

So Katie has to give baby the Roman baby food per LRH. On another note, I must vigorously protest the fact that Tom Cruise does not practice the morality he so loves to preach. He divorced Nicole, his wife of ten years. They have two children and Tom tore the family apart. Why? I thought Scientology had all the answers to making a marriage work. Tom also divorced Mimi Rogers. That is two divorces for Tom. Statistically, that means his marriage to Katie is doomed to fail. Tom cannot hold together a marriage over time and has in fact failed twice. Where is the OT in that? After he failed to use Scientology teaching to keep his marriage to Nicole together and his family united, Tom next apparently had promiscuous, premarital sex with several actresses and then with Katie Holmes and got her pregnant. Tom and Katie have had promiscuous, premarital sex. Hubbard is hard on such promiscuity:

Tom, and now Katie, are role models as Scientologists and so they have sent a global message to young people that Scientology approves of promiscuity and premarital sex. Tom Cruise has had both promiscuous and premarital sex, played a violent professional killer in Collateral, and has two divorces under his belt. And yet he has the temerity to attack psychiatry. Tom's ethics are out. He is sending all of the wrong messages out about Scientology. Katie is now technically an unwed mother, another sad statistic of the moral decline of society that CCHR laments in its screeds:

OR DOES SCIENTOLOGY APPROVE OF TOM AND KATIE'S PROMISCUITY? If Katie needs painkillers during childbirth, forget it! She has to remain quiet. She also is forbidden to use breathing techniques to help her per Scientology: Quote:

"Kelly Preston will be screaming in silent agony when she gives birth to hubby John Travolta's baby later this month. Her only relief through hours of excruciating labor will be to bite her lips and clench her husband's hand. The staunch Scientologist plans to follow her church's teachings about childbirth - which include a strict no-noise policy in the delivery room and a ban on painkillers. Even natural childbirth breathing techniques are forbidden. "'It's called quiet birth,' says Travolta of the Scientology procedure, which is used because L. Ron Hubbard, Scientology's founder, believed excessive noise can 'be the cause of irrational fears, compulsions and unexplainable behavior' later in a baby's life. 'The birth is for the child and for the mother,' explains John. 'Moans and groans are one thing. It's words that have the most potential. Any people saying negative verbiage could adversely affect the baby later on.' "Everyone in the delivery room--including doctors--are encouraged to keep as quiet as possible. 'The child will experience pain as it's being born, but to have all these people around saying all kinds of things makes it worse. As he grows up and hears these same words, it will stimulate the memory of the pain of birth.'" Katie will not be able to speak to her baby for the first week after it is born because LRH said so. A new baby's brain needs to start wiring itself to higher levels the second it is born, and mother-baby bonding are crucial. But Katie can't talk to her baby and neither can Tom. Hush for a week. What happens if Katie suffers from severe postpartum depression so severe that, God forbid, she is suicidal? Tom Cruise has taken a harsh stand against Brooke Shields. If Katie has suicidal feelings from postpartum depression, she will only be allowed vitamins and exercise. No anti-deppresants in the Cruise household! That would make Tom and Scientology look stupid and so, rather than getting Katie on anti-deppressants and giving her the help she needs, she will be put into the Introspection Rundown if she has postpartum depression. She will be isolated in a room like Lisa Mc Pherson and even Tom will not be allowed to see her. Katie will remain locked up until her CS decides she is better. If Katie gets put into the Introspection Rundown for postpartum depression and Tom has to leave to go make a movie, the Sea Org childcare system is a wonderful place to leave baby. They were filthy and in need of having their diapers changed. And at the time that I walked into the building and into the lobby, there was *no one* even there to keep their eyes on the children. Sorry to rain on Tom and Katie's good news of a baby on the way, but Tom is a hypocrite and needs to be called on it. Tom has two divorces, broke up his family with Nicole, and was promiscuous and slept around. He had premarital sex with Katie and is sending a message to people everywhere that Scientologists can get as many divorces as they want, be promiscuous, pretend to be violent killers in movies, and engage in generally whatever the hell insane and aberrated conduct they want to, all the while attacking psychiatry. I guess I am missing something here. I thought Scientology was moral, kept marriages and families together, and decried the moral and social decline of drugs, sexual promiscuity, depictions of violence, and illiteracy. When will Scientology hold Tom Cruise accountable for his atrocious and hypocritical behavior? Or is Tom a chosen one who gets to break all of Scientology's rules? Katie, take your baby and get out now! Scientology will want your child to go to a non-school, skip college, and go on staff with Sea Org at sixteen for $20 per week. Katie, is that what you want for your baby? Get out now. It is too late for Tom, but you can save yourself and your baby!

Apart from Ava's numerous email's and faxes about their trademark claims re http://www.scientomogy.info (which I do not consider harassment), it seems the local chapter of the Co$ has decided to begin a non stop barrage of phone calls, emails, and visits to my home - at any hour day or night.

The phone calls are always from a prepaid cellular phone and they've used plenty of different numbers, normally at night from 8pm till midnight. The first few I was stupid enough to answer but now they just call and call and call.

When I did speak to "a church member here in Auckland" he kept insisting over and over that we meet to talk about my "vendetta" with the church... I explained that my site is about Mr Cruise not the church and that was extremely clear - and all correspondence was to be through my lawyers and Ava - there was nothing else to say.

Then the visits to my home started. Now I have security cameras stationed at my front door and driveway entrance so I have never answered the door and therefore cannot be certain it is the church... but they have my home address and in 8 months of living here never had unsolicited callers - especially almost daily! Though when I do meet these guys at least I'll know them from the footage!

Interesting thing is... Last census showed only approx. 200 Scientologists in the whole of NZ!!

So, I wonder what's next???

A quick search on google on the word "Scientomogy" will yield dozens of new sites per day, including international news sites reporting on the recent threats from Scientology lawyers. Here's a couple;

September 25, 2005 The Church of Scientology has threatened legal action in order to take over ownership of the domain name of a web site which links to the odd behaviour of one of the world's most famous scientologists, Tom Cruise.

ScienTOMogy.info has apparently received a fax and at least 6 emails in the span of 2 days from Scientology lawyer Ava Paquette of Moxon & Kobrin threatening a lawsuit of up to $100,000 if the domain name ownership is not transferred. This type of letter is often called a cease and desist letter.

The owners of scienTOMogy.info have posted the complaints and their replies, saying that the site simply expresses opinion, does not make any claims, and clearly states that it has no connection to the Church of Scientology. "The site was put up as a single source to view all the recent hype Tom has made about the church - it does nothing but show Tom, so we are at a loss as to why the church is acting so rashly."

Steven Spielberg Will Not Be Working With Tom Cruise Again

September 21, 2005 - TOM Cruise shouldn't wait by the phone for his old "friend" Steven Spielberg, who directed him in "War of the Worlds," to call reports The New York Post.

Reports from Budapest and Paris, where Spielberg is filming "Munich," say the director is still steamed at Cruise for ranting, during what were supposed to be promotional appearances for the Martian-invasion film, against the widespread use of Ritalin to treat unruly children diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder.

One source said: "Steven and his wife [Kate Capshaw] have five children themselves and know some children for whom Ritalin does a lot of good. They took exception to what Tom said about the drug."

Spielberg was also said to be annoyed that Cruise played up Scientology more than the movie during press interviews.

In August, when PAGE SIX started researching this story, we received a letter from Cruise's lawyer Bert Fields, noting:

"We have received word that you are planning a report that Steven Spielberg was upset with Tom about Tom's speaking out about his views on children's use of drugs . . . and that now they are not speaking to each other."

The letter stated: "Each of these statements is absolutely and demonstrably false. Steven is not upset with Tom . . . Tom and Steven remain close friends and are looking forward to working together again. The idea that they are not speaking is not only false but absurd. Actually Steven is shooting a movie in Budapest and Tom is shooting one [in the States]."

But maybe Fields should have talked to Spielberg before writing this letter.

Another source, a close friend of the director, said: "They will not be working together again and Steven will never call him his friend."

When we faxed Fields' letter to Spielberg rep Marvin Levy and asked for comment, Levy stated "...I will get back to you on the [Cruise/Spelberg item] after I talk to Steven."

Levy called back to "decline comment."
